Oral and maxillofacial surgery is the specialty of dentistry which includes the diagnosis, surgical and related treatment of diseases, injuries and defects involving both the functional and esthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the head, mouth, teeth, gums, jaws and neck.
The specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery requires up to 6 additional years of postgraduate hospital based surgical and anesthesia training. In addition to the D.D.S. degree, Dr. Bates obtained an M.D. degree, as well as an additional year of training in surgery, completing a total of 10 years of post-college education and training.
Dr. Bates has a long history of patient care in the Dallas, Texas area, beginning private practice in 1987. Having founded Texas Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1995, Dr. Bates and his staff in 2003 completed a brand-new, state-of-the-art office-based surgical facility with hospital-grade operating and recovery rooms, the first of its kind in Dallas.
Through a broad range of extensive experience and continuing education, the doctor and staff offer the latest full-scope treatment in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

The staff is specially trained in assisting with intravenous (I.V.) anesthesia (including conscious and deep sedation and general anesthesia) within our state-of-the-art office-based setting. Patients are continuously monitored during and after surgery. Texas Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is registered with the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners as a provider of office-based anesthesia services.
Surgery requiring extended care is scheduled at either Dallas Medical Center or Texas Institute for Surgery, two of Dallas' premier specialty surgical hospitals.
